Our motivation, goals, and ideasNJIT Green is a student lead sustainability initiative on campus. For those who aren’t familiar with sustainability, it is not a synonym for environmentalism. In the context of human development, sustainability means:
Sustainability focuses on three aspects of society and poses that a balance of these three things will lead to sustainable development. Those three aspects are People, Profit, and Planet, also known as the Triple Bottom Line. So, while this semester we are focusing on environmentally related projects, we cannot neglect the People and Profit aspect. After all, environmental practices cannot be adopted if people feel attacked or disadvantaged, and no one will be environmentally friendly if it costs too much. The United Nations’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) is a good read to learn more about sustainability. These goals were adopted by countries around the globe in 2015 and are used as a framework for sustainable development projects. This semester, our projects address SDG numbers; 2 - Zero Hunger 4 - Quality Education 5 - Gender Equality 11 - Sustainable Cities and Communities 12 - Responsible Consumption and Production 13 - Climate Action GOAL: Fall 2018 |
